Hands On Look At The Famous Suunto Elementum Ventus Precision Instrument.
By Mark Winston
Compared to Swiss construction, the Finnish have made quite a competitive watch. The case of the Suunto Elementum Ventus is top shelf having a "carved not stamped" experience to it. I value the sapphire crystal, but I am let down that it is nor glare-proofed neither domed. Therefore in a touch, you should use it as a mirror to fix your hair. The pushers function effectively, even though much lauded "twisting A pusher" would seem just a little less than "swiss rugged" in my opinion. The display.... alright, after many years of Swiss watches which beautifully performed legible negative displays, I don't "get it" with this watch. Why can't Suunto create a negative display with plenty clearness and contrast to compete with the likes of a Breitling, TAG or RADO? From my personal limited knowledge of LCD technology, the main difference between a positive and a negative display is the polarizing filter. There isn't much else with it. So I'm perplexed why this is so hard to read. I'm pleased with the function of the watch. Suunto seems to have sought to make this particular watch as simple as possible! You will find basically four modes. The primary time display which could show either barometric pressure numerically or, inside the same area, show the dat. The barometric record, that is accessed by revolving the A pusher counter clockwise and scrolls the baro chart by hour increment. The compass, available via the C pusher in all modes with the exception of when the "race timer" is working; as well as the race timer itself. The count down chronograph is rather... difficult. It resets to zero by holding the C pusher after it has been halted by pressing the A pusher. When zeroed, it takes on 5 mins as the start time, despite the fact that you are able to swivel the A pusher to regulate this by minute steps. If set to zero, it really works like a modest chronograph. Why modest? It counts 10ths of seconds until 1 minute, after that switches to minutes and seconds, after which to minutes only. As for the last mode, no one is able to detect it is still going without catching a digit change. As opposed to the "regular" convention of blinking the ":" to show a going chronograph, the ":" is static. In addition unlucky is the fact that, when ended, the watch will not display the greater precise readings. Compare this to an Aerospace Watch, where when the chronograph is stopped, the watch alternates in between showing the minutes and the seconds, to enable you to at least access the level of accuracy kept in the watch. |
